The Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball team, a member of the CCAA with Sonoma State, has reached the Division II national championship game after beating Augusta State, 74-70, on Thursday at the Final Four in Springfield, Mass.

The Broncos (25-7) will play the winner of Thursday night’s game between Central Missouri and Findlay in the national title game at 10 a.m. (PDT) Saturday.

A CCAA team has not won a men’s basketball national title since 1997 when Cal State Bakersfield beat Northern Kentucky, 57-56.

Sonoma State finished 12-16, but lost to Pomona, 77-76, in overtime on Jan. 17 in Rohnert Park. Given Pomona’s run, that loss might rival any of the Seawolves’ wins this season.
Another local note: Maria Carrillo senior forward Justin Herold has signed with Pomona.
