UC Davis has strung together a three game winning streak with Casa Grande grad Joe Trombetta helping spark Saturday’s 34-31 win over Portland State.
The Aggies leading rusher on the season, Trombetta ran for 60 yards and added a 30 yard reception that was the key play in Davis’ drive for the eventual game winning field goal. Trombetta put the Aggies on the scoreboard with a first quarter, 4-yard touchdown run to answer the Vikings first score.
Trombetta and Joshua Reese totaled 143 rushing yards, carrying Davis past the century mark for the first time this season. At 4-3, the Aggies now have a winning mark on the 2009 campaign.
A redshirt junior, Trombetta leads Davis with 278 yards rushing and is fourth on the team with 20 catches. He is second with 404 all purpose yards, and Trombetta’s four touchdowns are tied for most on the Aggies.
The 6 foot, 220-pound Trombetta has bounced back from injuries that forced him to sit out four games in 2008. Still, he led Davis in rushing last year with 547 yards, including a trio of 100-yard games. Trombetta earned second team honors in the Great Western Conference, an NCAA Division I-AA league.
Trombetta set the Davis freshman rushing record in 2007 with 676 yards, again leading the team. His eight scores that year topped the team in touchdowns. Trombetta received the Aggies’ Mike Wise Award as outstanding freshman of the year.
