Strong showings in women’s basketball and volleyball, both water polo and swim teams, and men’s soccer and tennis helped Santa Rosa Junior College place fifth overall in athletics among California’s two-year schools.

Orange Coast College, in Costa Mesa, led the state’s 105 junior colleges, followed by Mt. San Antonio College, in Walnut, Riverside City College, Sierra College, in Rocklin, and Santa Rosa.

The 2009-10 rankings by the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators award points based on where teams place in post-conference competition. Results for each college’s top-five men’s and top-five women’s teams count in the overall point total.

The Bear Cubs’ successful seasons in women’s soccer and men’s wrestling also factored in Santa Rosa’s high ranking.
