Winning the California women’s basketball championship was the Santa Rosa Junior College team goal, yet several Bear Cubs players – all Empire prep standouts — also earned honors for their play on the memorable season.

Point guard and leading scorer Mia Greco – Petaluma High School — was named to the California Community College Athletic Association first team. Backcourt partner Jen Tsurumoto – Analy – made the all-state third team.

Dominating the Big 8 Conference set up Santa Rosa for the state title run. Greco was named the league’s most valuable player. Both Tsurumoto and Ashley Morgan – Maria Carrillo – earned all-conference honors.

Greco also was named MVP of the state tournament with Tsurumoto and Morgan named to the all-tournament team.

The three players reflected Santa Rosa’s balance. Greco was the team’s leading scorer averaging 14 a game with Tsurumoto second at 13 points and Morgan following with 9 a game. Greco led in assists averaging 4 and Morgan was the Bear Cubs top rebounder with 8 per contest.

All three could score from deep as well as inside. Morgan led Santa Rosa in 3-point shots made and Tsurumoto had the best shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Free throw shooting was one of the team’s strengths and Greco led in both makes and foul shot percentage.

Coach Lacey Campbell – Point Arena and Sonoma State – guided the Bear Cubs to the state final four each of the past two seasons. Campbell was named CCCAA NorCal coach of the year after earning the top coaching honor for the Big 8 Conference.
