A great season became even better for University of California catcher Chadd Krist as the former Petaluma High standout was picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the Major League Baseball draft Tuesday.
One round earlier, Sonoma State offensive force O’Koyea Dickson went to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Sonoma State shortstop Alex Todd was selected in the 27th round by the Houston Astros.
The earliest Empire player drafted was former Analy pitcher Nick Mutz in the ninth round by the Los Angeles Angels.
Krist is the starting catcher for a Bears team that has advanced to the super regionals of the NCAA baseball championship tournament. Cal plays a best-of-three series with Dallas Baptist at Santa Clara University starting Saturday.
The 411th overall draft pick, Krist is batting .306 with a team-leading 25 doubles. Krist is second in runs batted in with 40.
A junior, Krist was named to the all-Pac 10 first team for a second straight season. Krist was an All-Empire player at Petaluma High.
As the 374th overall pick, Dickson became the 38th player in SSU baseball history to be drafted.
In his first season at Sonoma State, the San Francisco native led the Seawolves in five offensive categories — runs scored, hits, home runs, total bases and slugging percentage. Dickson’s 11 home runs this season was second-best in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
Dickson, a junior, led the conference in runs scored with 61 and had 52 runs batted in, second in the league to teammate Kyle Jones.
The conference Newcomer of the Year, Dickson earned First Team All-West Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Daktronics, Inc. and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Dickson also received Gold Glove honors at his position this season — he sported a .983 fielding percentage with only nine errors in 520 chances.
Seawolves shortstop Todd, from San Jose, was the 820th overall pick in the baseball draft.
Todd was third on the team in batting with a .332 average, second in home runs with 5 and third with 38 runs batted in for the season.
A senior, Todd earned All-CCAA First Team honors, and was a First Team All-West Region selection by the ABCA, Daktronics, Inc., and the NCBWA.
Sonoma State advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship tournament in Cary, N.C., last week, the Seawolves’ second appearance in the finals.
Taken by the Angels with the 285th overall pick was Mutz, an All-Empire pitcher as an Analy senior three years ago.
Not playing for a college team this season, Mutz last played two seasons ago for Dakota State, an NAIA program in Madison, S.D.
The hard thrower had 65 strikeouts for the year, fourth in the school record books, and was one of the top closers in NAIA play. Mutz was an All-Dakota Athletic Conference selection.
