Led by women’s soccer and volleyball, Santa Rosa Junior College ranked among California’s top fall athletic programs.
Santa Rosa finished eighth statewide in overall athletic excellence for fall sports. Big 8 Conference rival American River topped the rankings by the National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators.
Colleges receive points based on where teams finish in state competition following conference play. The top five men’s and women’s teams at each school are counted.
Leading the Santa Rosa teams was the state title-winning women’s soccer squad. The Bear Cubs women went 20-1-3 and won the California Community College Athletic Association championship after finishing runner up in the state a year ago.
Reaching the state championship match made women’s volleyball the next-best finisher among Bear Cubs teams. Santa Rosa went 30-4, finishing second in the state championships for a second consecutive season.
Host to the CCCAA Wrestling State Championships, the Bear Cubs grapplers finished ninth after eight wrestlers qualified for the state tournament.
Santa Rosa men’s water polo team also had a fine season, reaching the Nor Cal Regional tournament featuring the top six teams in the north.
