Honoring an SRJC coaching legend, the Bear Cubs softball team hosts the inaugural Marv Mays Day on Saturday.

Held at Marv Mays Field, the event features a doubleheader between Santa Rosa and Diablo Valley College. The first pitch is 12 p.m.

An exhibition youth softball game will be played between the college contests. Also a fundraiser, the softball program will sell T-Shirts and hold a silent auction.

A new award named in the honor of Marv Mays will be presented to a standout SRJC softball player.

Mays — who passed away a year ago at 76 — is most remembered as the coach who led Santa Rosa to an unofficial state junior college football title in 1978. Mays led the program for 27 years.

But he also was Santa Rosa’s longtime softball coach, leading the Bear Cubs to the 1982 state championship. In addition, Mays was the college’s first wrestling coach. Mays’ is a member of the SRJC Hall of Fame.
