Following a standout college golf career, Sonoma State great Spencer Heller qualified for the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
Heller — All-American each of her four years at Sonoma State — made the field out of a qualifying tournament at Sequoyah Country Club, in Oakland. She needed a pair of playoff holes to secure one of eight spots and move on to the championships.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship, first held in 1895, is set for Aug. 5-11 at the Country Club of Charleston, in South Carolina.
Making the national tournament has been a challenge for Heller, who finished back in the field at previous qualifiers.
Adding the nation’s top amateur event to her resume follows another strong season at Sonoma State.
Heller qualified for her fourth consecutive NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships after earning co-medalist honors at the women’s Super Region 4 Tournament.
With a 23rd place finish at the NCAA championships Heller was named second team All-American.
As a freshman, from Turlock, she was honorable-mention All-America following a 10th-place finish in the NCAA Championship. Heller was honorable mention All-America again as a sophomore and placed 15th at nationals. As a junior she was first-team All-America with an eighth at nationals.
