What about next year?

by admin

Due to Sonoma State’s unexpected flameout, I’m marooned in St. Louis until Sunday afternoon. With no game to cover, I figured it was never too soon to look ahead to next year. SSU will miss Matt Means, Konrad Thieme, Nick Nosti, David Adler …. but they could be pretty good. Here’s a look at some of the players likely to be back: Travis Babin, P/3B, Jr. (.329, 6 HR, 20 RBI, 4-0, 4.25 … Read More »

Goelz in defeat

by admin

After Sonoma State’s 2-1 loss to Ouachita Baptist on Friday, Seawolves coach John Goelz was clearly dejected, but his smile, even if it was a little forced, remained intact. During the postgame press conference, he spotted me and said, “You flew a long way to see four hits. How dumb are you?” (Answer: Somewhat. But I’ve always wanted to see Sauget in late May.) When he was asked if he … Read More »

Seawolves Arrive. Wind Blows.

by admin

Sonoma State arrived at 10:13 a.m. – first pitch is at noon – and Seawolves coach John Goelz wasn’t thrilled to see the flags whipping atop the scoreboard in right-center field. A stiff wind is blowing in. SSU has out-homered opponents 11-0 during its seven games in the NCAA Tournament. As omens go, this isn’t a positive one for the Seawolves.

Where is Sauget?

by admin

The slogan of Sauget, Ill., should be “A Village of 249 People No One Has Ever Heard Of, But Really, Really Close To A Lot of Stuff That’s Pretty Cool.” Sauget is a largely industrial area about three miles from downtown St. Louis, just across the Mississippi River, in southern Illinois. Sauget is known for a large sewage treatment plant, a chemical treatment plant, a high concentration of strip clubs and CGC Ballpark, a 6,000-seat jewel that is … Read More »

Goelz keeps sense of humor

by admin

I touched down — or at least my plane did — at 11:15 p.m. local time in St. Louis. After a call to the office, I discovered Sonoma State lost 2-1 to Ouachita Baptist while I flew from Phoenix to Lambert International Airport. A quick call to Seawolves coach John Goelz, however, revealed that his sense of humor was intact, despite the loss. “Where were you?” he asked. “I could have … Read More »
