SRJC’s strongman once hid in the corner

by admin

SRJC linebacker Jarred Pereira is 6-foot, 245 pounds, runs a 4.5-second 40-yard dash, has a 32-inch vertical leap and can bench press 450 pounds. He ranks third in the state in tackles with 12.3 a game and is basically one scary dude, at least on a football field. But in talking to Pereira for a feature story on him this week, I discovered he wasn’t always quite so ferocious. A weight-room junkie … Read More »

SRJC soccer: Moving day

by admin

The Santa Rosa Junior College soccer teams began practicing today at Trione Fields, where they will play the rest of their home games this season. The Bear Cubs are making the move while their grass field on campus is replaced with a synthetic surface. The mid-season move isn’t ideal ” the coaches and players will have to commute, which could make it difficult for players to get taped and … Read More »

SSU men’s soccer: ‘A good loss.’

by admin

Before his team played at Notre Dame de Namur last week, Sonoma State men’s soccer coach Marcus Ziemer tried to ready his players for a tough match. Ziemer had just seen Notre Dame beat Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1, and he knew the Argonauts’ little bandbox of a field was a great equalizer. Still, the odds of SSU being seriously threatened seemed remote. The Seawolves, after all, were 5-0 and ranked second in … Read More »

SRJC football: Throw out the ranking. Please.

by admin

The Santa Rosa Junior College football team is ranked 24th nationally in the JC Grid-Wire Top 25 with a 2-0 record. What does this mean? Perhaps not much. Reedley College (1-1) is ranked 19th. SRJC beat Reedley 38-20, on the road, in its season opener. By the way, City College of San Francisco, previously ranked No. 1, fell to No. 8 after losing to Fresno 24-17 last week. No. 5 Fresno visits SRJC … Read More »

Scott Ware: ‘It’s tough right now.’

by admin

Santa Rosa’s Scott Ware survived the Indianapolis Colts’ 2007 training camp. All the practices. All four preseason games. At the end, he just had to survive three hours — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. — on the final cut day. If a player was going to be cut, he’d be called between those hours. Ware made it to 12:55 p.m. Five minutes from a dream. Then the phone rang. “Absolutely devastating,” … Read More »

Casa Grande’s Forni starring after staying at CCSF

by admin

Good things come to those who stubbornly believe in themselves. Just ask City College of San Francisco quarterback Chris Forni, who seemed destined to spend his entire junior college career on the bench a few months ago. Forni, a former star at Casa Grande High, spent last year as the back-up to Jeremiah Masoli, the Offensive MVP of the NorCal Football Conference as a freshman. Masoli led the Rams to the national … Read More »

Lenny Wagner: Leader of a forever-exhausted defense

by admin

In his previous stops at Sonoma State and Mendocino College, it was not uncommon for Santa Rosa Junior College defensive coordinator Lenny Wagner to oversee one of the nation’s top-ranked defenses. In 1999, for example, when he was the head coach at Mendocino, the Eagles’ defense ranked second nationally and limited opponents to 48.2 rushing yards a game. Since he arrived at SRJC in 2000, however, none of his defenses have come … Read More »
