SRJC football: Bear Cubs show heart

by admin

Last year, the Santa Rosa Junior College football team lost four of its last five games. They didn’t just lose. They showed little heart or resiliency. Those aren’t great qualities in general. But they unforgivable sins in the ultra-macho world of football. With that in mind, various Bear Cubs have made a point of saying things have changed. SSU men’s soccer: Middlemiss getting his kicks. And getting kicked.

by admin

Ross Middlemiss has been so good this season, he’s getting abused. Middlemiss, SSU’s senior center forward, scored a school-record four goals in the Seawolves’ 5-0 win against Cal State San Bernardino on Friday and has 16 goals this year, the four-highest total in SSU history. Middlemiss is enjoying his success, if not some of the treatment that’s come with it. He entered the season with 11 career goals. “Some teams have come out … Read More »

SSU volleyball: Bloodied, but unbowed

by admin

The Sonoma State women’s volleyball team entered last week off to the best mark in school history at 14-1 and it was also riding a 10-game winning streak, which tied a school record. The Seawolves’ success was no mirage. Their wins over then-No. 15 Cal State Los Angeles and No. 25 Chico State proved their legitimacy. SSU, which last had a winning season in 2004, is clearly better. But last week showed … Read More »

Mendocino’s Gang gets players to come West

by admin

Sometimes you ask a question and are surprised by the answer. That happened today when I asked Mendocino College football coach Tom Gang about the number of out-of-state players on his team. A few minutes later, he was taking a shot at SRJC coach Keith Simons. SRJC visits Mendocino at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Eagles’ 76-man roster includes 17 players from Florida, eight from Oregon, five from Georgia, four from Washington, one from … Read More »
