After a forgettable pit stop at Chico State, former Cardinal Newman star Matt Cousins has resurfaced at Santa Rosa Junior College.
And Cousins, a 6-foot-8 center who was an all-state selection as a senior at Newman, looked plenty impressive in his SRJC debut last week.
In three games at the season-opening San Francisco City Tournament, Cousins averaged 18.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and shot 68 percent from the field (21 of 31). The …

As a sports fan, I was interested in talking to Ross Middlemiss.
As a sportswriter, I wasn’t too excited about asking him to rehash the worst moment of his soccer career.
OK, some background:
Middlemiss is a senior forward at Sonoma State who had one of the best seasons in Seawolves’ history, perhaps the best when including both his academic and athletic excellence. A part-time starter as a junior, Middlemiss …

About three years ago, Steve George, 62, a former fullback and linebacker at Santa Rosa Junior College, began taking classes at his old school.
Not long after, he spent about a month with his wife constructing a Bear Cub mascot uniform of papier-mache and fake fur.
“I went down and asked them in the school office why they didn’t have a mascot and they said they hadn’t had one in 15 years,” …

Then sophomore Cassie Nelson was lost for the season with a dislocated shoulder. Now freshman outside hitter Liz Tomforde will miss tonight’s game at Diablo Valley College with a shoulder injury.

After a humbling loss to Butte College, the Santa Rosa Junior College football team arrived ultra-focused for its 44-7 win against Foothill College, then the state’s fourth-ranked team, on Saturday.
In almost laughably sloppy field conditions, the Bear Cubs committed two penalties and didn’t have a turnover until the fourth quarter.
Yes, SRJC wasn’t in the mood for mistakes.
Even from their mascot.
In the second half, a referee notified the Bear Cubs coaches …
