SSU men’s basketball: Why Zac Tiedeman isn’t a Seawolf

by admin

After the story on Humboldt State point guard Zac Tideman ran in today’s paper, Sonoma State coach Pat Fuscaldo said he had several people contacting him to ask: Why didn’t Sonoma State recruit Tiedeman, a transfer from Santa Clara who grew up in Santa Rosa and whose dad, Steve, is in the SSU Athletic Hall of Fame. The answer is simple. Tiedeman didn’t want to come. When he requested his release … Read More »

Feeling unhip: My interview with Kim Navarro

by admin

I’m 36 years old, but sometimes I feel much older. Last weekend, for example, I was interviewing professional ice dancer Kim Navarro of Santa Rosa over the phone after she and her partner, Brent Bommentre, won the bronze medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Cleveland. Navarro was telling me how energized the crowd was by their free-dance performance. It was real up-tempo, she explained. Naturally, I asked Navarro what music … Read More »

Navarro to compete at U.S. Championships

by admin

Last year, Kim Navarro and ice-dancing partner Brent Bommentre finished a career-best third at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. As a result, the duo earned its first trip to the World Championships. But in the months that have followed Navarro has realized she and Bommentre got something else thanks to their breakthrough performance: Pressure. Expectations. And an inability to play the role of gutty little underdogs. “I like being under the radar,” said … Read More »

SSU men’s basketball: Anatomy of a season

by admin

After 13 games, Sonoma State’s season can be neatly summarized by its performances in back-to-back road games last weekend. On Friday, the Seawolves crushed Cal State Stanislaus, 98-57, for their most lopsided victory since 1999. Twenty-four hours later, they squandered a 10-point, second-half lead in a 72-62 overtime loss to Chico State. “When we win, we look really good,” SSU coach Pat Fuscaldo said. “When we lose, we make it an art … Read More »
