Sonoma State senior Lindsay Emmel has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in strikeouts and opponent’s batting average.
Emmel, who sat out last season due to major shoulder surgery, returned to post a 16-9 record and 1.70 ERA with 165 strikeouts in 156 innings. Opponents are hitting .176 against the Atascadero native.

Windsor High graduate and Penn State junior Lauren Rusert will participate in the Division I Rugby National Championships, which will begin Friday at Stanford University.
Penn State will meet Navy while defending national champion Stanford meets Brown in the other semifinal. Penn State won the national title in 2007 and lost to Stanford in te title game last year.
Rusert participated in soccer, cross country, softball and wrestling at Windsor.

Santa Rosa Junior College guard Lucas Dominigue has signed with with William Jessup University, a Division II school in Rocklin.
The 6-foot-2 Dominigue, a graduate of Sonoma Valley High, averaged 3.5 points and 2.3 rebounds as the Bear Cubs went 17-16 and earned a spot in the NorCal Regional playoffs this past season.

The Sonoma State women’s golf team has earned a spot in the nine-team Division II Super Regional in just its second year of existence.
The Seawolves earned the No. 5 seed in the regional, which will be held May 4-6 at Ironwood Golf and Country Club in Omaha, Neb. The top three teams at the regional will advance to the 12-team NCAA Championships from May 13-16 in Findlay, Ohio.

The Santa Rosa Junior College men’s and women’s swimming teams paid for the price for their victories at the Big 8 Conference Championships last week in Sacramento.

Montgomery High alums Jaime and Duncan Kelm are starters on the San Diego State rugby team, which has advanced to the Final Four of the National Collegiate Division I Championships for the first time in 22 years.

Sonoma State baseball fans eager to see the exploits of Joey Parigi have been disappointed this season.
Parigi, a three-time all-state selection at Monterey High who played at Texas and Arizona State, was expected to have a big impact as an outfielder and pitcher.

Former Windsor High star Jill Rizo, a freshman catcher/outfielder at Dominican University, has been named the California Pacific Conference’s Softball Player of the Week.
Rizo went 4 for 10 with two RBIs, two walks and a stolen base to lead the Penguins (8-26) to a 3-1 record last week.
Rizo hit .507 with 22 RBIs as a senior at Windsor and struck out once in 71 at-bats.

Petaluma’s Sam Banister is having a memorable senior season at the University of Arizona, which is 32-8 and ranked No. 9 in the NFCA Top 25.
